Tommy Cortes Trussell was born in Washington D.C. on April 4, 1942 to parents Leon Trussell & Adele Kathleen (Steed) Trussell, Tommy grew up in Del Rio, Texas, graduated from Del Rio High School in 1960 and Texas Tech University in 1964 as a commissioned officer in the United States of America Army. Served in Vietnam. Had a lustrous career in the Army. Lt. Col Trussell served with the 1st battalion 26th infantry regiment in Vietnam. He was ordered to active duty from the Army Reserves. As a member of the Blue Spades he received the National Defense Service medal, Combat Infantryman badge, Bronze Star (1st OLC), Air Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal with device. Tommy was deeply involved, as a company commander in the Battle of Ap Gu 3-31-67 to 4-1-67 One of the most horrific battles of the war. Worked at Wulf Outdoor Sports for several years in the fishing department. He was attending Lydia Missionary Baptist Church in Huxley,Texas. In the early afternoon of May 15,2017 Tommy was going to visit some friends on his riding lawnmower. He was going up an incline when the mower flipped over backwards on top of him. As friends rushed to help he said he wasn't hurt and lay on the ground. After about 10 minutes Tommy went into cardiac arrest All attempts to save him failed and Tommy reposed. The horrors he went through in Vietnam could not take my friend's life but a simple accident like this did. My heart is sad and heavy old friend. May you have Eternal Memory. Services are pending the finding of Tommy's relatives.
