Winifred Ruth Kennedy Thompson (1940) Obituary

 

Winifred Ruth Kennedy Thompson, 92, passed away on September 17, 2014. She was born August 20, 1922 in Fredericksburg, Texas, to Margaret Blum and Arthur Kennedy.

Her family moved to Del Rio, Texas in 1927 where she grew up and graduated from Del Rio High School in 1940. She married her high school sweetheart, Harold Thompson, in 1942. While he served in the Coast Guard during WWII, she worked in the office of the US Corps of Engineers during the construction of Laughlin Air Force Base near Del Rio.

After the war she and Harold moved to Corpus Christi where he was employed with HEB for 33 years. They raised their five children there. When Harold retired they moved to their farm in Live Oak County and lived there 15 years.

Winnie was active in the Girl Scouts, church and choir wherever they lived. She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church where she sang in the choir for 8 years. Winnie cherished her friendships with all the wonderful ladies of The Sew-and-Sews club. If you were to ask her what she loved most she would say her family. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother of five, and great-grandmother of six beautiful children. Winnie’s husband of 72 years had passed away only five weeks before her. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by daughters Paula and husband Dan Butt, Mary and husband Wes Franklin. Her sons Duff, Matthew, Jerome and his wife Yoli. Grandchildren are Karen and husband Todd Brockwell, Dana and husband Barrow Hamilton, Fair and husband Jon Aleshire, Duffy Thompson and wife Anne, and Aaron Arnold. Great-grandchildren are David and Miley Hamilton, Lee and William Brockwell, and Kennedy and Beck Aleshire.

Visitation will be 10 A.M. – 2 P.M. Tuesday, September 23rd at Grimes Funeral Chapels in Kerrville. Funeral service to be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
