Shearley (Alexander) Forrest, Class of 1956
Lura said she wasn't in any of the pictures, but I also thought I recognized her. I'll take her word that the one I thought was her just looked somewhat like her. I did think also that Kitty Kessler was one of the contestants. I also along with others recognized Ellen Belcher and Mary Elizabeth Barefield. I also recognized Fern McBee . I wonder if Sue McBee wasn't in the contest also. I wish I were able to see the photos a little better. I'm sure most of us would know these friends and classmates.

Very interesting. Keep up the excellent work.

Sorry to inject into your contest, but Willie Ellen Belcher '56 won the Miss Del Rio and the 2 runner-ups shown in the photo with Danny Cobb are Kay Averill '54 and Carol Marvin.

Wilma Joyce (Gooding) White, Class of 1953
I AM NOT SURE ABOUT THE YEAR BUT I WAS IN THE PHOTOS wearing white heels AND REPRESENTED THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD.  THE PHOTO ALSO APPEARED IN A LITTLE MAGAZINE SOUTHERN PACIFIC PUT OUT.

Not sure of the girls, but it made me think about the time at the Miss
Del Rio Pageant at Moore Park Swimming Pool.

There was a "guest" Olympic swimmer present and he (Leon Skeleton) was going to do a demonstration swim. Leon entered the pool in the shallow end and had some sort of disguise, as I remember, and unknown to all present After Leon entered the pool he hooked up an underwater rope to a belt he had hidden around his waist.

At the other end of the rope was several of us guys, Jim Hays was one of them and probably Bubba Tidwell and Gary Humphreys and others. When the starting horn sounded we all ran as fast as we could pulling Skeleton along. We had measured the distance we would pull him prior to everyone gathering and put a stick in the ground where we would stop. This allowed him to stop just short of the wall at the deep end.

Of course, when we were pulling him he was planing out like a speed boat and everyone got a big laugh. No one recognized Leon and thus the "trick" was played out with great amusement. I think Jim's brother, Bubba Hays was managing the swimming pool at that time and was probably the one who instigated the whole event. I think that may have been the year the Janet Tidwell won the Miss Del Rio contest. Just saying..........

Lura (Boyd) Bowers, Class of 1956
I Would like to take credit for being picture #11, but I was always a skinny bean pole in those days and would never have had the nerve to enter a bathing suit contest. That was for beauties like Ellen Belcher and Roylyn McCulley as well as the others shown.

Dorothy (Brooks) Lawler, Class of 1958
I thought that I recognized Mary Elizabeth Barefield & Lura Boyd in the photos that Jody Mayfield had sent.  If Ellen Belcher is in the bunch as Jonella says.....the year was 1953.  According to the archives of the DR News-Herald that I searched, That was the year that Ellen won the title of Miss Del Rio.

I wanted to give you my take on the photos sent by Jody Mayfield.  I hope I’m not wrong but I’m also not 100% positive about a few of them.  I’ve numbered them starting at the top with #1 on the left, then #2 on the right, then down to the next row #3 on the left and #4 on the right and so on.  Is that clear as mud?
#1 – Carole Marvin
#8 – Carol Tanksley
#9 – may be Fern McBee
#11 – Lura Boyd
!#12 – Mary Elizabeth Barefield
#13 – Willie Ellen Belcher
#14 – Sue McBee
