Oscar San Miguel, Jr. (Class of 1964) obituary

 

Oscar R. San Miguel Sr., Our Beloved Cowboy and Grandpa made his final ride on Thursday, January 4, 2018, at the age of 73 surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Grandpa was born on July 12, 1944, in Zaragoza, Coahuila, Mexico to Heriberto and Chita San Miguel. In 1954, his family migrated to the US and became US citizens. He attended school in and graduated from Del Rio High School in 1964. At a young age, while attending school he worked at the Renovato Tortilla Factory contributing to the family income. He was drafted into the US Army and served in Vietnam. He began a career at Del Rio News Herald, that spanned over 22 years. He worked in many department from circulation, advertising and finished his career as acting publisher. After his tenure in the newspaper business he was a partner and general manager of the Union Slaughter House. He followed a different career path and began working for Val Verde County as the Parks and Recreation Director where he retired and was then appointed and served as County Commissioner for Precinct 4. He was very involved with his community through various organizations including the UCO. He was very proud to be able to serve as the first Hispanic and youngest school board member and President for SFDRCISD. His pride and joy was for his grandchildren, family, friends, community and livestock. He had an even greater passion for his Lord and Savior. He is preceded in death by his parents Heriberto and Chita San Miguel and sister Lupita San Miguel.

He is survived by his loving wife Delores San Miguel. His sons Oscar San Miguel Jr. and wife Sandra, Rodney Hale and daughter Lisa Gavia and husband Jesus. Brother Joe San Miguel and wife Conchita, niece Sandra Rousseaux and husband Jon and his sister Argentina (Argie) San Miguel. His grandchildren Alanis, Cisco, Brandon, Jonathan, Jennifer, Jacqueline, Zoe and Makenna. Great Grandchildren Cirenity, Khloey, Trinity and Alisa. Brother in Laws James R. Wiliamson, Clyde Williamson and wife Carolyn and Phillip Matthews. He also had a special place in his heart for Keta San Miguel and Norma Correa. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Sunday, January 7, 2018, 5:00pm-9:00pm, Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral Home. Recitation of the Holy Rosary 7:00pm.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, January 8, 2018, 3:00pm, St Joseph Catholic Church.

Gentlemen with the honor of pallbearers; Joe Frank Martinez, Leo Martinez, Richard Vann, Jose Mendoza, Felix “Cat” Sauceda and Lupe Guzman.

Military Honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 595.

Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Oaks Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers please send donations to St. Joseph’s Church for St. Vincent De Paul and cemetery maintenance.

what great admiration so many Del Rioans have for the whole San Miguei family. They were my schoolmates, and later I worked a short time at the News-Herald with both Oscar and Joe. They are modern day immigrants like in the days of old, who came here, pledged alligiance, and grabbed the American dream! They became contributing members of society.
