Cornelia K. Davis, Class of 1942

Cornelia Keller Davis 86, a lifelong resident of Del Rio, passed away unexpectedly at her home on June 2, 2012. She was born August 18, 1925 in Del Rio, Texas. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Van Davis, Janalee Davis Fulps and husband Don, Darrell Davis and wife Brenda. Other survivors are her sisters, Dorothy (Dot) Parrott, Evelyn Wicke, Terry Marshall, brother Dr. Charles W. Keller, grandchildren, Buckley O’Block, Jason Davis, Justin Davis, Kelley Jo Davis Schnpp, Shera Lee Davis, James Drew Fulps, Amy Davis and Evangelina Davis, nine great grand children and many other cherished friends and relatives. Cornelia’s family were early day Del Rio settlers, her grandfather being a signatory of the petition to change the Texas Constitution to create Val Verde County in the 1880’s (then part of Kinney County) and then in later years becoming the second mayor of Del Rio. Cornelia was a co-owner of Flying D Eggs, Inc. and Davis Ranch Partnership. She had many interest and hobbies, the first being a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in which she served in many capacities over the years; she was head of the youth group when she was 15 and 16 years old. She had taught children’s Sunday school, had served as a chairman of the Together Circle and had served as chairman of the executive council. Cornelia was a long time member of the Del Rio Study Club joining in 1953 and serving as President in 1957 and 1958. She became a private pilot in 1952 and flew for a number of years. She participated in air races and served as chairman of the Texas Chapter of the 99’s (an international organization of women pilots.) Cornelia was interested in Quarter Horse racing and purchased acreage in south Del Rio to establish a race horse farm. Her horses ran in Texas, New Mexico and California. Gentlemen with the honor of pallbearers are David Winters, Ray Felts, Bill Cauthorn , Tuffy Whitehead, Martin Wardlaw and Charlie Woods. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 5, 2012 from 5:00-7:00 pm at G.W. Cox Memorial Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at the Masonic Cemetery on Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. June 6, 2012.
