John Burnett Ross (Class of 1963) Obituary

John Burnett Ross, M.D.

John Burnett Ross died peacefully at his home in Austin, Texas on May 19, 2021.  He was 76.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Stephen Mabry Ross, Sr. and Beatrice Hyslop Ross; and his brother, Stephen Mabry Ross, Jr.

John was born in Del Rio, Texas where he hunted, fished and excelled in competitive sports. He attended Del Rio High School where he was honorably mentioned as an All-State football candidate in 1961, his junior year.  After graduation, he went on to the University of Texas in Austin and the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, earning his medical degree in 1973.  He remained in Galveston to complete his training in obstetrics and gynecology and, in 1977, joined OB/GYN Associates, P.C. in Houston where he delivered thousands of healthy babies until he retired in 2010.  A dedicated and lifelong golf enthusiast, John lived and played golf in Horseshoe Bay until he couldn’t.

During his life, John loved many things including the Texas Longhorns, good Mexican food and golf.  He cherished the enduring friendships he made while growing up in Del Rio.  He loved his country.  Above all, he loved his family, and often expressed regrets for time taken away from them due to the demands of his profession.

John is survived by a loving family:  A son, Stephen Scott Ross of San Antonio, Texas, his wife, Marla, and their daughters Julia and Megan; a son, Jeffrey Cauthorn Ross of Austin, Texas, his wife, Gina, and their children Grace and Robert; a daughter, Kathryn Ross DeFord of Austin, Texas, her husband, Evan, and children Everett and Sloane; brother James Ross, his wife, Jan of San Antonio; sister, Laura Ross Reynolds of San Antonio; and brother Henry Ross, his wife, Anne, of Amelia Island, Florida; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date once COVID restrictions have been further eased.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that a memorial contribution be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the charity of the donor’s choice.
