Dancing With Her Dream Boy

We received this photo, not from the writer Lynn Wright, but from another source asking if anyone can identify who’s in the photo and also if anyone remembers this dance at the Laughlin Base officers club. Based on the age of the girl – she may have graduated from Del Rio in 1962.

Notice also the ‘duck tails’ (hair style) on the boys.

The side bar on the photo reads: “I was 14 when someone took this picture of me dancing with Mr. Teen 1959. My stepfather was stationed at Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas, where I attended a dance at the officers club. I still remember the skirt and sweater I was wearing – turquoise with silver strips. Notice my white fur collar, which was so hip in those days.

Mr. Teen wore a maroon stripped shirt and those famous white buckskin shoes. I think his name was Dwayne, but I’m not sure.  I do know I was the only girl he danced with that night. I’m sure it was because my mother was in charge of the dance, but at the time I thought it was because he was my dream boy. As the night ended, he went his way and I went mine. Once in a while I wonder what happened to him. I’d like to thank him for making all of my friends so envious of me that night.”

Of course we remember Jutta (refer to Gary's comments below). Jutto Johne was our German exchange student. She lived with Nancy and Frank Newton's family while she attended DRHS. We loved having her along, and she was probably the only person to ever make the Spanish Club trip who actually owned a passport at the time and needed to carry it to Monterrey, Mexico! When we went to Lando's or shopping, she just kept a low profile in the car coming back!

Looks to me like this dream boy was only a dream, what is known  today as a Movie Crasher. He is nowhere to be found in the movie credits of “The Alamo”, look it up.  No one seems to remember him. The only Google search comes up in the News Herald, not even in San Antonio where he was from……………I just wonder if he is a wedding crasher these days. J  Look for him Kay!
Anyone remember Jutta?

Oh, this is getting just too delicious! We have to get in touch with Darryl Deayn Mr.Teen 1959 Hanson! Oh yes, I use the word “We” loosely. I would never do it. But I think Robert Brockwell would…or the brave Ms. Caffey-Sandstrum, who now openly admits a previously unsuspected relationship with Mr. Hanson.  Laughing

Jane (Caffey) Sandstrum, Class of '65
I know who he is.  His name is Darryl Deayn (Hanson).  He is from San Antonio and was indeed Mr. Teen 1959.  I know because (oh, Foolish Youth!) I was the President of his fan club!  He appeared at a promotional dance at the Teen Club and the picture you show is probably from that time.  He moved to Los Angeles shortly after that to "seek his fame and fortune" in Hollywood and I never heard of or from him again.

Linda (Strot) Hansen, Class 1962
Somebody has a sharp eye and a great memory!  That was me dancing with Dean Hayden--he was my date.  I do not recall Mr. Teen 1959. I couldn't get over the fact that I was a lowly sophomore dating a senior!!

Helen (Lane) Smith, Class of 1961
I don't remember a visit by "Mr. Teen", but I think the picture was probably taken at the Teen Center rather than LAFB.  That is Jim Haga and me (Helen Lane) on the left, so I would say it was 1959 or 1960.   We don't look like we are too impressed with "Mr. Teen" Smile

Robert Brockwell, Class of 1954
I talked to Lynn today regarding the picture and who she was dancing with.
She was so excited about the things I told her. She would have been in the class of 61, but they moved to San Antonio. I told her to register and she could read some of the things that were written.

Well I went home yesterday, took my ginkgo, cleaned my eyeglasses,  found my old Branding Irons, pulled out my magnifying glass, used a computer with better resolution and worked on identifying the rest of the people in the photo.

First let me make a correction on my other post....Jim Haga was in the Class of '60.

I think that the girl behind Lynn Wright is Linda Strot '62 and  I believe she is dancing with Dean Hayden '60.

And the couple dancing behind Joe Croft (in tan jacket) ?? That's me and my date Pam Livingston.

Going all the way back to1959? Hmmmmm.... certainly tired out the old brain cells.

A nap sounds good.

OK, now that I can see the picture I recognize Jim Haga, on left,  dancing
with Helen Lane in red dress.(Both in Class of 1961).  Behind "Mr. Teen" in tan sport jacket is Joe Croft, Class of 1960

John Brockwell, Class of 1960
I believe he was in the John Wayne movie "The Alamo" being filmed in Bracketville and I think his name was Dwayne.  I don't remember where but I do remember meeting him somewhere in Del Rio.

Mr. Teen,,,,,,,Google..... Darryl Dean Mr Teen 1959 Del Rio.....The story will come up in Del Rio News Herald Archives telling about his appearance at the short lived youth center on Las Vacas.  It was in the Del Rio Cowboys baseball team's old clubhouse.

Below is the article Jack referenced:
Mr Teen 1959 Was Well Received at Del Rio Youth Center Sunday Afternoon
‘Capacity crowds received Darryl Dean, Mr. Teen 1959, at the Youth Center Sunday afternoon at 2:30 and at 4:30.

Accompanying him were Wayne Ridgeway, Johnny Lee Brockwell, Jeff Green, Bill and John Miller. Mrs. Herbert Walker presented young Dean with a life membership to the Youth Center.

He was introduced by Major Harry Oglesby for the performances that were so well attended.

Mr. Teen 1959 is an actor in “The Alamo” being produced in Brackettville by John Wayne. He portrays the role of the youngest defender at the Alamo, a 13 year old boy.

He has been impressed with ‘how well members of the center get along with one another.”
