Doris Lowrey Howell

Doris Lowrey Howell passed away at her home in Del Rio, Texas on June 26, 2009 at the age of 78. She was born September 21,1930 in Del Rio, Texas where she lived most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Grady Lowrey and May Clarkson Lowrey. She attended Sullins College in Virginia and later graduated from the University of Texas in Austin in 1951. She met Charles Howell of Lakeland, Florida while he was stationed at Laughlin Air Force Base and they married shortly after. They moved to Austin for a short period of time and returned to Del Rio to raise their family. She worked for Lowrey, Foster & Hodge from 1971 until her retirement in 1999.  Doris was a Life Member of the UT Alumni Association, a member of the Fine Arts Club, the Cactus Thorn Garden Club, and a lifelong, active member of St. James Episcopal Church and a founding member and Treasurer of St. James Episcopal School.   She was an avid sports fan and loved to watch the San Antonio Spurs and the Texas Longhorn games. She also loved the Upstagers and Firehouse Fantastics.  She was also was a supporter of the Friends of the Library and numerous other organizations. Doris was always "ready to go" and always had a smile on her face. She is survived by her three daughters, Ellen Paschal and her husband Ben, Mary Ross and her husband, Kevin, and Elizabeth May "Libba" Akeroyd and her husband Charles "Chuck" of Del Rio.  She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kristina, William, Katherine, Abigail, Cody and Chase. 

She was preceded in death by her father, Grady Lowrey and mother, May Clarkson Lowrey and her husband, Charles Edward Howell. Pallbearers are George Thurmond, Coleman "Buddy" Nelson, Byron Hodge, David Winters. John Wardlaw, Radney Foster, Arnoldo Romero and Todd Felton. Honorary Pallbearers are Richard Cooper, Walter Block and Bob Matzig.

Visitations will be Monday, 5-9:00P.M, June 29, 2009 at G. W. Cox Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. The Family will receive friends from 6-8:00P.M. Funeral service will be Tuesday, 9:00A.M, June 30, 2009 at St James Episcopal Church with The Reverend David Chalk officiating. Interment at Westlawn Cemetery will follow. In lieu of usual remembrances donations can be made to St. James Episcopal Church or School.
